I wouldn't consider it a blunder. I would say it was inevitable. By that time Nepal was already going a bit astray and taking too much advantage over India's friendliness, changes to the constitution aside.

It's a bit hard for me to cite instances because it was long back. I'll just say that even if that hadn't been done then, it would have occurred later at some point. Some flexing had to be done, to send a message. We don't have to worry much about Chinese infiltration as Nepal can use China as leverage only a bit as unlike Bangladesh and Pakistan they don't have a coast and are too dependent on India. And there is no use for that railway line. It'd only end up as a white elephant.

For better or worse, that this "blockade" is seen as India's doing is because of a few extremely loud Nepalese on the internet going unchecked. Nepal is really not that important, so Indians, otherwise very vocal in defending India, don't put much efforts in countering this narrative. 

The fact is that Madheshis felt real discrimination on the question of the new constitution so the situation was not conducive on the ground and violence ensued. They still are treated very badly in the hill regions. Don't believe me, just type in "madheshi" on Twitter or on the Nepali subreddit, and you'll know why they felt extreme alienation. 

And the root of this discrimination is because "they look like Indians". Anyone who feels like Indian govt just woke up one day and chose to blockade a region is reading only one side of the issue. 

Imagine being xenophobic to a huge minority (over 45%) of your own population and facing consequences for it. Huh, not the Pahadis, they do what they want. /s

There is no smoke without fire. 

Also, no, the relations with Nepal weren't "permanently fractured" because of this incident. Nepal has been trying to take advantage of the security concerns India has wrt China since over 6 decades now. This is despite the fact that India has allowed Nepal way too many concessions across time. Open borders, no-visa entry, transit rights across Indian mainland etc. None of this stops Nepalese politicians from riling up people against India. Reading up on the Nepalese ruling class' actions (kings and elected leaders alike) through the decades makes this very very clear. 

Also, because you bring up the 2015 earthquake, do know that it was unconditional Indian assistance that got Nepal back to its feet as well. But somehow that point is missed everytime 2015 is talked about. 

Also, no, Oli did not become popular due to this singular incident alone. The Maoist movement in Nepal has been going for over 4 decades now. The last king was literally deposed by their movement in 2008. It is a Maoist movement, which is banned in India completely. Yet, India kept its concerns aside and offered to work with them. Yet, somehow India is the big bad guy in Nepal. 

Anyway, is it really a surprise that Maoists would seek better relations with China? Nah, somehow that's India's fault as well, or they wouldn't have even turned an eye to China. 

Nepal really needs to wake up and see the reality. They get any and all significance they have from being a neighbour to India. India, meanwhile derives it's vitality from within, we stand on our own. They need to learn from Bhutan in channeling its resources to meet India's needs. That's the way to mutual benefit and cooperation, and what has led to Bhutan being the most prosperous country in South Asia. 

Or India can always completely ignore Nepal and look for other ways to meet our needs. We can do that and not really lose much sleep over it, while they'll destroy themselves completely as they are on the way anyway. 

I'd really suggest that India give Nepal the Pakistan treatment sooner rather than later. Barricade away the border completely, revoke the free access Nepalese have to our markets, land and ports and to the extent possible draw down economic ties as well. Let them go to the benevolent China and see how they fare, it considers them one of the 5 fingers anyway.

So, in conclusion, no it was not any huge foreign policy blunder of the Indian govt, we give way too much importance to Nepal that it does not deserve. 

The biggest blunder would probably be not focusing on infra development along the China border sooner (since 2014 itself).

 It was Madheshi (people living in Terai region) who blocked it. Why? Because they were not happy with the new constitution. I don't know much but it was something related to seat allocation and representation in parliament.

This sparked protest and riots in Nepal's Terai region (terai region is next to UP and bihar). Madheshi people blocked all the trucks entering in nepal. This was a message to Kathmandu to accept their demands. 

Was India involved in it? Maybe or maybe not. Nepali government see Madheshi leaders and people as an Indian proxy. India wanted a proportional representation of Madheshi, tharu etc in Parliament as promised in interm Constitution. Something nepal's new constitution doesn't have.

Nepal is also responsible for it. They could have addressed Madheshi leaders concerns but they didn't.

Probably it was a bit top harsh but then, the communists blew the issue too to suit their agenda

India has been a scapegoat for all local problems that Nepal faces. Not any different from any of our other neighbors.

I don't buy the 'Pakistan won the narrative war' buzz. Its mostly the pro American/Western ideology flagbearers news channels who always try to side with the one whom they don't see as a challenge in the coming days. Even if your point is true, the only thing it will do is increase the credit limit of Pakistan in the IMF books. Who cares frankly!

As for international support, all the major countries have taken a note of India's military prowess therefore see us their competitors in the defence space. We need to understand our interests. I would believe they are(in no order of preference)

1. Coercing the behaviour of Pakistani elite(read army) to ensure no terrorism

3. Improving education, infrastructure, healthcare for our citizens
4. Ensuring a mutually beneficial relationship with other neighbours including china.

No country is going to support openly in these kinds of wars where India is clearly the aggresor. Israel supported India because they do the same thing when needed, so in no way they can say that we don't support India, if they say it, that would mean what they were doing to Gaza was wrong in the first place. 
This was a fight against terrorism, not a war. Our government officially rightfully bombed  another country, we are the aggressor. It doesn't go with the image of  countries to side with the aggressors. When Israel was hitting Gaza, nobody openly supported but all countries have still maintained good relations with Israel. 

However, most countries internally support India. Trump did not want a big Indian market to get hit and lose purchasing power for trade. So, as soon he heard nuclear, he stepped in.

1. Majority of people from West supports pakistan,like they support gaza and Palestine. In the whole world population wise muslims are on the 2nd position.
